The 21-year-old was shortlisted from more than 2,500 others and people have until tomorrow to vote for her. The contest aims to find the UK's sexiest "girl next door".

Miss Mitchell said: "My family and friends have been voting. I am a dancer so when I have been doing a show I have been getting people to vote for me."

She has appeared in music videos while working as a dancer and said she hoped appearing on the front of FHM would help drive her career forward. Originally from Yorkshire, she moved to the area with her mum, Kate, about five years ago.

Miss Mitchell went to Manchester for a photo shoot and interview before being shortlisted in the competition. She said that because she was used to performing she had not found it daunting.

She said: "For me being in the top 100 is not enough and I would much rather be in the top 10 or win. However, it is cool being shortlisted."

People who want to vote for Zara can go to www.fhm.com, fill in a voting slip from the competition supplement in the October issue or text FHM79 to 87121. Popular stories:
