Ryan Jervis, head of the Lakelands School in Ellesmere, announced his retirement plans to parents and guardians in the sport and language college's September newsletter which is published on the school's website.

The head, who is also the match announcer at Shrewsbury Town Football Club, is to leave the school next summer after 12 years at the helm.

In the newsletter he said: "Probably the worst kept secret of all time is my intention to retire next summer.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my 12 years as head of Lakelands School and although this has been the most difficult decision that I have ever had to make and feel the time is right to move on to the next stage of my life."

The governors will advertise for a new headteacher on October 13 and hope to make an appointment just before Christmas.

Mr Jervis said: "Whoever is appointed, they will inherit a very happy and successful school with fantastic pupils, parents who give complete support and a staff both teaching and non-teaching who give 100 per cent in everything they do."

Mr Jervis and his staff have enjoyed many successes over the years .

It has also been revealed Lakelands has been invited to bid for a third speciality - something few schools have been invited to do.

Pupils also had very successful GCSE exam results this year which Mr Jervis has described as "the best results ever".
