Cyclists' rudeness hard to forget

My attention has been drawn to an article published in your newspaper on August 22, written by Ben Bentley, describing the activities of the "Last of the Summer Wine" cycling group.

Published

As I was alluded to in that article, I hope you will grant me the space to comment.

Every other cycling group I have ridden with observes the unwritten courtesies ie. stopping in the event of mechanical problems and waiting while calls of nature are attended to. After all these are social rides not races.

Such niceties were significantly absent on the last occasion I rode with this group. I stopped for a toilet break of about two or three minutes, after which the group were out of sight.

I never saw them again, nor did they appear at the café where I waited.

This happened over five years ago and in all that time no word of explanation or apology for this extraordinary behaviour has ever reached me.

I have not forgotten that day, nor it seems, has founder member Mr Ken Pye who chose to recount the incident to your reporter. Guilty conscience perhaps?
