Workers let down by unions

Workers have always been led to believe that trade unions are there to look after their members. In fact, they are just another big businessman, allied to the finance industry selling the worker anything from pensions to insurance policies.

Unions also claim to negotiate better pay awards for their members, but at the same time defend the rights of migrant workers.

I don't blame people from Eastern Europe coming here to earn extra money to send home to their families. But I do blame the Government for encouraging them here to over-supply the labour market and drive wages down.

I remember under the last Conservative government wage rises were kept down to five per cent.

Now under a Labour government workers would be lucky to get two per cent, while employers give themselves inflation-busting inc- reases or offshore British jobs to the Far East where labour costs are cheaper.

Unions are happy to go along with this policy as long as they get subscriptions from migrant workers to off-set their losses against the export of British jobs. And what good did unions do for Rover and Peugeot workers?
