Plenty of fun at friend's party

I am not a party animal, preferring to be a voyeur rather than a participant, but I could not refuse when a longstanding friend invited us to help her celebrate an anniversary. It was to be just a quiet party.

On arrival we found it was a street party as everyone could not get into the house. As the alcohol started flowing it developed into what I call an educational party: I learned something new every minute.

I learned about the family and antecedents of those who had been invited. I learned new (dirty) jokes and how to keep the children quiet and still (half fill a lemonade bottle with gin).

I learned the trick of pulling off the tablecloth, leaving crockery standing, and just how costly replacements were! I learned not to keep peering at the cleavage of the girl opposite me - my wife has a vicious kick and the girl's partner was built like a brick outhouse.

I learned how to lose money at snap and not to play strip poker when the air is chilly. I learned what it is that neighbours shout when their sleep is disturbed by a street party. I learned how to fade into the background when the police arrive.

It was a good party, Josie, and I must have enjoyed myself because my wife is still not talking to me. I'll come next time, if I am ever invited again.
