Confused by road changes

I am a road user living in Telford and I am a little confused and dismayed at recent changes I have experienced at busy road junctions. The most recent change is the introduction of traffic lights on the island at Ketley Brook.

My wife and I use this island on most days at different times and very rarely have we ever experienced congestion.

So imagine my dismay when I read two weeks ago that the transport system was being changed here with the specific intent to slow down the traffic.

Slowing traffic down here will only add to congestion and the subsequent pollution.

Other similar introductions of traffic lights on islands have led to increases in congestion and subsequent journey times.

The Holinswood interchange on the A442 has crazy and misleading lane markings leading to confusion and near misses.

At Junction 4 on the M54, queues now form regularly at all roads joining the island and on the island.

At the Trench Lock interchange on the A442 there is an overall improvement in the traffic management, but further improvements are necessary to avoid needless congestion.

I have found myself forced to stop at many times at the traffic lights around the Telford Town Centre ring road when there are no other road users within half a mile. What is the purpose? Why can't sensors be used to only activate the lights when necessary during quiet periods?
