Picture is reminder of lorries

Your photo of Percy Thrower apparently taking delivery of a new lorry is interesting (Star, Wednesday). The truck is a BMC FG 30 nicknamed "The Threepenny Bit Cab" model, on account of the oddly-shaped cab with rear entry doors.

It was a horrible vehicle to drive, with poor brakes and stiff steering, and not a patch on the old Morris LC5, pictured in the background.

The LC5 was a favourite with scrap dealers as it would carry three tons easily, and although supposed to hold only 1.5 tons, had strong springs so never looked overloaded. It would touch 70mph with its A70 engine. Petrol consumption was eight to 10 mpg - not a problem as fuel was only 3d to 4d a gallon.

I had loads of those old trucks for £25 or £30 in the 1960s, and made a fiver profit by selling them to the travellers who thought they were Kings of the Road.
