Gates opened at 9am on Saturday for the second annual Shropshire Kids Festival and hundreds of excited children were queuing to get in.

Once past the ticket booths they had to chose between getting wet on the giant water slides, hurtling at speed on the zip wires or attending Superhero School.

There were more than 150 activities to keep them entertained - from donkey rides to huge inflatable obstacle courses there was something for everyone.

Festival organiser Beth Heath described the event as 'the best kid's party ever' and revealed that a similar festival will be held undercover at Telford International Centre next year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the town.

Crowds of up to 15,000 are expected over the weekend.

Samantha Hill, 27 from Shrewsbury took her sons Kane, seven and three year old Ruben to the event. The support worker had taken advantage of the early bird tickets which meant she avoided the queues.

She said: "The kids have been able to go on the big things which were so popular last year without having to queue to get on. The whole festival has been really well organised and the kids have loved it."

Bev Briggs, 27 thought the festival was excellent value for money. The nursery nurse's five-year-old son TJ had been on the zip wires and the Zorb balls.

"Getting in early with our special tickets was well worth it. We came last year and had to queue a bit but there was none of that this time."

Issac Collins, two, was with his mum Helen and the pair had travelled from Wolverhampton.

"We have been to other festivals like this but they have been nowhere near as good, said Helen, a teacher.

"Issac had a great time on the big inflatables and in the circus school. It is a real plus that entrance for adults was only £2 with a child. Other festivals have been much more expensive. There is so much here it is really good value."

The festival runs until Sunday.
