The actor, best known for playing Trigger in the long-running comedy, died at home in London last night.

His agent, Maureen Vincent, said he had pancreatic cancer and had "died at home surrounded by his family".

Lloyd-Pack, who was also known to millions as Owen in The Vicar Of Dibley and Tom from The Old Guys, is also the father of actress Emily Lloyd.

He was one of television's most recognised faces and a father to four children.

He once said of his much-loved role as roadsweeper Trigger: "It's both a blessing and a curse.

"It's extraordinary to me as an actor to find oneself in a sitcom that's been successful and goes on being successful. Usually things date, but I can't go anywhere without anyone going on about it.

"I think being an actor has been hard for my children. Although I was at home a lot, particularly when they were young, I think having a famous father is difficult.

"It can be embarrassing and annoying for the kids."

During his television career, Roger Lloyd-Pack appeared in such hit shows as Doctor Who, Hustle and The Borgias, among many other top television series.

He also appeared in a number of feature films, including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Made in Dagenham and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

This afternoon actor John Challis, best known as Boycie from Only Fools and Horses, said he was devastated by the news.

The actor and author, who lives at Wigmore, near Ludlow, on the south Shropshire border, said: "I spoke to Roger two days ago. Roger said it was a bit awkward to talk at that particular moment. It is very sad and very distressing.

"My thoughts are with his family. He was a remarkable man and he'll be missed. Roger is irreplaceable. It's a very sorry day."
