Sugar Ray Leonard: Richie Woodhall puts boxing great's signed glove up for auction
Boxing fans will get the chance to own a glove signed by legendary American fighter Sugar Ray Leonard next week in Richie Woodhall's latest charity auction.
All proceeds raised from the sale, at Halls auction house in Shrewsbury, will go to The Harry Johnson Trust, which provides support for children and teenagers being treated for cancer at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital.
The charity was set up by Sally and Stephen Johnson in memory of their son Harry who died two years ago this week from a rare form of the disease.
The Telford-based former super-middleweight world champion teamed up with the Shropshire Star and Halls to raise money for cancer charities after his father Len died from the disease a year ago.
Sugar Ray Leonard won world titles in five weight divisions, including a run as the undisputed welterweight champion.
Richie got him to sign the glove at a sportsman's evening in Cannock in 2014.
"He was a really intelligent man," he said. "If you didn't know who Sugar Ray Leonard was, you would never guess he was a boxer."
The auction takes place on July 27 at Halls in Bowmen Way, Battlefield, Shrewsbury, SY4 3DR, starting at 10am. The gloves can be viewed between 9.30am and 4.30pm the day before, or from 9am on the day of the auction. Those unable to attend in person can place an absentee or commission bid with the auctioneer before the sale.
It is also possible to bid live over the internet while the auction is taking place, allowing those who need to stay at home or at work to bid interactively while the auction is taking place.
To do this you need to register online at www.the-saleroom.com/halls before the auction begins.
