Clee Hill turn on the style to sink leaders

Clee Hill United took a massive leap towards lifting Herefordshire League Premier Division crown after notching a superb 4-1 victory at leaders Wellington Reserves.

The top-of-the-table success leaves Clee just five points adrift of the pacesetters in second spot, and firm favourites with no fewer than four games in hand.

They dominated from start to finish in one of their best displays of the season, and will look to trim the gap further on Saturday when they head to Kingstone Rovers.

Boss Wayne Whitbread said: “It was a great performance all round. We started well and never looked back, and could have won by a few more.

“It’s in our own hands now, but we won’t be taking anything for granted.”

After a frustrating few weeks without a game, Clee were soon in their stride and led at the interval when Sean Millward scored from a corner.

They could have been further ahead at the break, but had a couple of other efforts disallowed, before strengthening their grip in the second half.

Craig Breakwell capped a superb display up front with the second goal, and James Clifford added a third when converting the rebound after his first strike had rattled the bar. The goal was initially disallowed by the linesman, but the decision was overruled by the referee.

Wellington got one back with a cross-shot, but the three-goal cushion was quickly restored as top scorer Josh Carpenter broke through to make it 4-1.

Victory completed an impressive double against their title rivals after Clee ran out 3-2 winners at home earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, Gornal Colts have the West Midlands League Division Two crown firmly in their grasp after securing a 1-0 success at Ludlow.

With one game remaining, the victory took Gornal three points clear at the top from Church Stretton, and another win at AFC Bentley on Saturday would secure the title.

A late penalty from Matt Smith settled the issue at Ludlow who were left to reflect on missed chances on a frustrating afternoon.

“We came flying out of the traps and could have been four or five up in the first half-hour,” said joint boss Chris Waldron. “And if you don’t take your chances, you get punished which is what happened.”

Ludlow, who currently lie fourth, have now finished their league campaign, but are still in the League Cup and have a semi-final trip to last weekend’s opponents Gornal Colts on Saturday, April 13.
