The star striker went five games without netting – his longest barren run as a Wolves player – before nabbing the equaliser to earn a point in the 2-2 draw with Ipswich last weekend.

And boss Kenny Jackett hopes the goal heralds the beginning of a prolific run for the £15m-rated man.

"It was very good to see him back on the scoresheet," Jackett said.

"Hopefully he can really put on a good run now – that would be great.

"He's got to look forward and work towards hitting top form.

"I thought his attitude, his work rate and his body language against Ipswich were very good.

"I felt Adam Le Fondre made a difference when he came on, helped Benik and freed him up bit.

"In tough games you need that number nine to, at times, make some bad balls good ones, turn a few iffy situations into a throw or a corner and keep the momentum building. He can do that."

Wolves host MK Dons at Molineux on Saturday and then face three more teams currently below them in the Championship table – Rotherham United, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United.

Jackett has called for his players to put themselves in with a chance of making the play-offs by closing the gap ahead of the second half of the season.

He said the coming weeks were a 'vital period' for his team.

"We're not a bad side but we're looking to be a better one that can win consistently," he said.

"If you're looking at the run through to the FA Cup (weekend of January 10) it's a vital period.

"We want as many people fit and available as possible and see if we can close the gap, push up the table and be in a position in the second half of the season to stay really close if we can."
