Wolves target Matt Mills has set his heart on a move to Molineux – providing the clubs can agree a fee.

Sources close to the 24-year-old Reading defender, who was last night linked with big-spending Leicester, wants to sign for Mick McCarthy, but he will not rock the boat by asking for a transfer.

That puts the focus back on the two clubs, who remain "some way apart" in their respective valuations of the former Doncaster stopper. Reading want £4m for Mills while Wolves have offered £3m-plus for the Madejski skipper, who has a year left on his contract.

Mills is understood to have discussed his future with Royals boss Brian McDermott yesterday.

McDermott is keen to hang on to his skipper and Reading have offered Mills a new deal worth up to £20,000 a week.

But Mills will be aware he could improve on that at Wolves, if and when a fee is agreed for his services.

Blackburn and Stoke remain in the background in case Wolves fail to win the bidding war, which isn't expected to reach a swift conclusion.

Reading have discussed prices with other clubs but Wolves are understood to be the only serious players talking about bids.

"I've had a meeting with Matt plus a few of the others this week, there's nothing new in that," said McDermott.

"I'm hopeful Matt will stay, as I am with all of our players."
