The New Saints shock as boss Scott Ruscoe sacked after one game back

The New Saints sent shockwaves across Welsh football as the Cymru Premier leaders reveal they have sacked boss and ex-playing legend Scott Ruscoe.

The decision came around 24 hours after Ruscoe’s Saints had returned to action with a 0-0 draw against third-placed Bala Town after a Covid-19-enforced break that had sidelined them since mid-December.

The point at Park Hall meant TNS stayed top of the Cymru Premier, a point clear of rivals and reigning champions Connah’s Quay.

Ruscoe, a huge favourite in his Park Hall playing days between 2002 and 2016, won the Welsh top-flight title in two of his three seasons in charge of the Oswestry-based club, as well as three cup wins. TNS’s grip on the domestic crown slipped when last season was prematurely ended and Connah’s Quay landed top spot on a points-per-game basis.

TNS said in a statement they had decided to part company with Ruscoe and assistant Steve Evans. Head of coaching Chris Seargeant has been placed in temporary charge as the search for a new boss begins.

The Saints backed Ruscoe to break their transfer record with the swoop for AFC Wimbledon striker Adam Roscrow in January.
