Shrewsbury Town sign Coventry midfielder Jim O'Brien
Shrewsbury Town have made it a magnificent seven after completing the signing of Coventry midfielder Jim O'Brien.
The 28-year-old attacking midfielder, who has been been released by the Sky Blues, has become Micky Mellon's seventh summer capture after penning a two-year deal.
The Scot, who started his career at Celtic, has made 267 League appearances for Motherwell, Barnsley, Coventry and Scunthorpe, where he finished last season on loan.
Town boss Micky Mellon told ShrewsWeb: "It's a really exciting signing and one we've pursued for quite some time.
"I know Jim from my Barnsley days and after that kept an eye on how he was doing at Coventry and Scunthorpe.
"He's continued that level of performance from there and I believe he'll be a real fans' favourite and somebody who will do very well for us.
"He can play as a winger on both sides, he can play off the front men and he can play attacking midfield so he can cover a number of options for us.
"His best position is attacking either off a front man or as a winger. He's a good addition and adds a lot to the group.
"He brings experience and that desire to win. Jim is very comfortable at League One level, in fact I'd say in the Championship at Barnsley he was very comfortable at that level as well.
"So he's a really good addition to the group and I'm pleased we've been able to get a player of that level into the building."
O'Brien is looking forward to getting settled again after struggling to adapt at Coventry away from his family.
"Coventry is a very good club and it probably never worked out as it should have there," he said.
"But that was personal matters more than football and just being away from my family.
"So I'll learn from that and I'll get a place in Shrewsbury because I don't want to be commuting from Yorkshire.
"I'll find that balance a lot better now. I thought I could handle it with the travelling but then I was out the team for a bit and it was tough to take when you are sitting in a hotel for half the week."
O'Brien finished last season injured after undergoing groin surgery.
"I had an operation on my groin because I tore it off the bone. That was six weeks before the season finished so I'm good and raring to go," he told ShrewsWeb.
"I've worked the whole summer so when you see pictures of the lads on the beach it's hard to take when you're in the gym every day but you push yourself and motivate yourself.
"I've been working really hard to get back and I'm feeling good now. I'll get a week away with my family now to relax."
