Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner will reassess his defensive plans after Julian Bennett's loan stint faces being cut short by a hip injury.

The experienced Sheffield Wednesday defender missed Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Oldham but the manager doesn't expect Bennett to be out for a lengthy spell.

However, his loan deal expires before Town return to action on December 8 at Crawley.

Turner had taken the precaution of signing West Brom youngster Cameron Gayle before last Thursday's loan deadline.

The Town boss said: "Julian's got a trapped nerve around his hip, which we hope can be manipulated. He should be fit in a fortnight, but that is if he is still with us.

"His loan finishes in a week's time so we'll have to talk to Sheffield Wednesday about that."

Gayle, 20, impressed Turner with his performance at Boundary Park in what was his senior debut.

The manager said: "Cameron's a tidy player who can play anywhere across the back. He got forward quite well and used the ball well.

"He probably wouldn't have been thrown in at the deep end had Julian been fit. But for a young lad to come in after one day of training, I think he acquitted himself very well."

Shrewsbury were undone by a first-half strike from Jonathan Grounds as their away form showed little sign of improving.

They have taken just three points from a potential 30 on their travels all season and Turner admitted: "That's unacceptable when we've taken 15 points from our home matches.

"But as you see from the second half it's not from a lack of effort. I don't know whether we just expect it to happen and hope. But Oldham were quicker to the ball than we were in the first period.

"We knew they would start quick as that's been their record, but there was not a lot in it in the end. All we can do is keep playing the way we are doing and believe it's going to turn for us."

Town were convinced they should have won a late penalty when Marvin Morgan went down in the box.

Defender Jermaine Grandison said: "It was a penalty to me from where I was standing."
