Confident Bucks full of belief ahead of trip to streetwise Worksop Town

AFC Telford United boss Kevin Wilkin says his squad are full of belief ahead of their trip to National League North strugglers Worksop Town.

The Bucks have won seven of their last eight league games and have rocketed up to eighth place, just a point outside the play-off places.

They picked up another hard-fought victory in midweek, 2-0 at Spennymoor Town, and ahead of another away game tomorrow afternoon the Telford boss admitted his in-form side will need to be on top of their game to defeat an experienced Tigers side.

"We know Worksop have got an immense amount of experience in the group and have lots of players that have been there and done it over and above this level," Wilkin said. "There's a lot of understanding and a lot of presence in their side, and with them playing on a 3g surface that they'll be more used to it adds another challenge.

"These are difficulties that we have to overcome. They were a tough side when we faced them at home and I'm sure they'll be difficult to overcome on Saturday.

"We'll go there with every confidence. We're in decent form ourselves and we're believing in and enjoying our football at the moment, and it's just another game that we're fully focused on winning."

A founder member of the Conference North, Worksop Town returned to step two football this season for the first time since 2007.

Despite finishing 26 points behind runaway champions Macclesfield, victories over Ashton United and Guiseley in the play-offs saw the Tigers complete a memorable promotion campaign.

Much of Worksop’s resurgence has been masterminded by manager Craig Parry. After guiding Pontefract Collieries to successive promotions, Parry took charge at Sandy Lane in May 2020 and has overseen sustained progress ever since.

Town began life back in the National League North brightly, collecting 11 points from their opening seven fixtures, but form has since become inconsistent, leaving them 18th in the table with 32 points. They are currently without a win in five matches, although that run includes creditable draws against promotion-chasers Kidderminster Harriers, Darlington and Scarborough Athletic.

Parry has moved to bolster his attacking options with the addition of former Mickleover forward Oli Greaves following his release from Buxton. Greaves helps offset the January departure of talisman Liam Hughes to Cleethorpes Town. Even so, Worksop retain plenty of goal threat, with Jordan Burrows and Aaron Martin both reaching double figures, while midfielder Aleksandrs Starcenko has contributed five goals.

Kevin Wilkin will be hoping that his main goal scorers will continue their fine form when they take to the 3g surface at Sandy Lane tomorrow.

Remi Walker's goal in midweek took his tally in the league up to 10, while Charlie Williams proved an inspired substitution with his late strike.

The decision on who plays on the left of Telford's front three will likely be the trickiest that Wilkin has to make tomorrow. Williams' goal may have been enough to tip things in his favour, but Dylan Allen-Hadley's strong form will not be quickly forgotten by the Bucks boss.
