Alan Moogan in frame for AFC Telford captaincy

AFC Telford United boss Liam Watson is considering handing the vacant captaincy to player-coach Alan Moogan for their Skrill Conference Premier challenge.

Simon Grand skippered the side to the Conference North title last season, Watson's first in charge, but the centre-back has now moved on to sign for Barrow.

That has left the position open with Moogan, whose 2013-14 schedule was decimated by a hamstring injury, a contender to lead the Bucks side going forward.

The 30-year-old was back in the team by the end of the campaign, but Watson wants to see him go through a labour intensive pre-season before making the call.

The Telford manager also has summer signing Steve Akrigg, another defender with experience of the level, in his thoughts for the role as he retains an open mind.

He said: "It all depends on how Alan Moogan gets through pre-season. If he's fully fit and raring to go, I will probably make him captain, but only if he's ready to do it.

"He's always been a leader on the pitch for me, so it makes sense. It could easily be him, with someone like Steve Akrigg as vice-captain. But that's not set in stone."

The Bucks are likely to being pre-season training in the final week of the month.
