Lee Carter to step down as AFC Telford chairman
AFC Telford United today began the search for a new chairman after Lee Carter announced he is to step down to concentrate on his role as managing director.
The Supporter's Trust and club board plan to boost their off-the-pitch stewardship to not only cope with the demands of life in the Blue Square Bet Premier but with the long-term aim of securing a place in the Football League.
Carter has been at the helm since Telford reformed in 2004 and has overseen three promotions. He will step down at the end of the season. During his tenure the club have turned over seven consecutive years of profit.
Independent chair of the appointments committee Jenny Wynn explained why the club was splitting the two roles.
"We are already a significant business but the demands on the management since promotion to the Conference League have been considerable," she said.
"The challenges are considerable and, while both roles are significant, put simply two heads are better than one."
The Trust and directors plan to complete the final phases of a restructure of the club, which they started earlier this year.
Under the proposals supporters may be able to gain a stake in Telford by buying shares.
Carter will be involved in choosing his successor as a member of the committee. The appointment is expected to be in place by the end of the season.
"It is vital we conduct a process which finds the right person who can bring additional energy to the board and help us all to deliver our vision," said Carter.
"The change is designed to ensure we continue to meet our responsibilities to the supporters of AFC Telford United. We have never been afraid of seeking a new perspective. But I will continue to be right at the heart of the club."
"This is a very important development for the business and I have indicated that this is the right time to get moving on this particular issue.
"I remain fully committed to the club and am absolutely determined to play my part in ensuring that we continue to move forward."
