And Church Stretton have been deducted ten points for making the incident public.

Officials have handed out the punishment after a disciplinary hearing by the Shropshire County Cricket League.

Ball admitted a level four breach, which covers such offences as physical assault of another player, umpire, official or spectator, or any act of violence on the field of play.

League spoesman Nick Broadbent said: "Prees batsman Nick Ball has received a ten-week ban from the SCCL disciplinary committee after admitting a Level Four breach in the game against Church Stretton on August 15.

"The match was abandoned following the incident and the match points will stand – five points each for the abandonment, with Prees gaining an additional five bowling points.

"Stretton have also been deducted ten points for making the incident public via the press, against the specific advice of both the league chairman and secretary, before the issue could be discussed between the league management and the parties involved."

Stretton players left the pitch in protest after the incident, which brought an end to the Division Two clash at Prees' Brades Road ground.

It is understood Prees, who were also carrying out their own investigation, will not appeal the decision.

On the day, Church Stretton had lost the toss and been asked to bat on a damp wicket, with Prees dismissing their opponents for 94.

With Prees then batting, it was in the fifth over of their innings when the incident happened.

Prees cricket secretary Philip Richards said: "We have been asked by the league not to make any comment.

"They have dealt with the matter as far as we are concerned."
