Wolves boss Stale Solbakken: We can be heroes
Stale Solbakken today laid down the ambitious challenge to create new heroes to grace the Wolves museum.
The Wolves boss appeared at the star-studded gathering for the opening of the hugely impressive facility last night and believes it serves as an inspiration to him and the current players to join the club's greats.
Solbakken, who was a guest at the opening with first-team coach Patrick Weiser, introduced himself to 1950s legend and World Cup winner Ron Flowers, club record appearance holder Derek Parkin and 306-goal top scorer Steve Bull.
Asked how important it is to acknowledge the club's history, Solbakken said: "It's crucial. Like Steve Morgan, I think it's really important that there's a place where you can go and recognise the club's history.
"As a manager, it's important for me to create new history so we can have some input and the museum isn't just relying on the old history.
"If a club has a tradition – and Wolves have a great tradition – good stadium, a certain fanbase and if you do the right things on and off the pitch, I can't see any reason why Wolverhampton can't be a stable team in the Premier League."
Solbakken recognises that the process of creating new heroes and legends is a long-term one. But he believes he has already laid down one foundation to help it flourish – team spirit.
"When you see training and the atmosphere, it's fantastic and I think that's a good base to have now when we're having tough times," he said.
And Solbakken wants to be challenging this season, as he prepares to welcome Nottingham Forest to Molineux tomorrow.
"We don't want to finish outside the top six – we want to challenge for those positions," he added.
"I'm very confident we'll have a good season and that we're going in the right direction. Saying it's a long season is a very good excuse, but we want points as quickly as possible."
Solbakken took a personal trip down memory lane by meeting Parkin, who was in the Wolves squad who visited the manager's home village of Grue in Norway on a pre-season tour in 1977.
"I've revisited my own youth," he said.
