Wolves are ready to pounce if Newcastle fail to land Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford after making an enquiry for the prolific striker.

Newcastle are in pole position for Beckford, after reportedly having a £1.25m bid turned down last week.

Leeds are believed to be keen on cashing in now on the 26-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, rather than allow him to leave for nothing in the summer, and another £250,000 could seal the deal.

But Wolves insists there is no truth in reports that they offered Sam Vokes plus £300,000 for Beckford.

The Elland Road forward, who has scored 74 goals in 129 games, including 20 this season, is just one of numerous targets the club are eyeing and they may well miss out on him as they ponder various options.

Beckford himself may believe Newcastle offer at least an equal chance of giving him Premier League football as Wolves.

The striker, who was also enquired about in the last window, is the second player they have bid for, with an offer of around £3million already in for Hull winger Stephen Hunt. But they have asked about his availability with a striker is on their hitlist.

Wolves want to cover themselves if £6.5m record signing Kevin Doyle gets injured, with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake still to score in open play while Andy Keogh and Stefan Maierhofer are out injured.

Vokes has recently returned from a three-month loan spell at Elland Road, where he played alongside Beckford.

On the whole, chief executive Jez Moxey urged fans to be patient.

He said: "We're being linked with lots of names, but there is nothing to say really until something happens. We've got our targets and we're speaking to lots of people, but it's still early in the window."
