Wolves have signed Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne on loan until December 29.

The 20-year-old England under-21 international is available for tomorrow's Molineux clash against Swansea.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy said: "We wanted some defensive cover, because we wanted to stop conceding goals at the rate we have - 14 in five games isn't good enough.

"Michael is a good defender and very quick. He is travelling up today and could be in the squad tomorrow.

"But I wouldn't want to throw him in without doing some work with him first."

Mancienne knows all about the Championship, having played over 50 times on loan for QPR in the last two seasons. The young Chelsea defender arrives at a time when Jody Craddock is back in training while Richard Stearman is available after suspension.

McCarthy said: "Jody isn't ready yet and may not be for a few weeks."

One player who has had his hopes of a loan move scuppered is Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray, who has missed out on a loan deal to Milton Keynes

Dons, because current No 1 Carl Ikeme has a slight back problem.

Murray was going to join the League One club to cover a three match ban to Willy Gueret, but Ikeme's injury means the luckless 27-year-old will have to wait for a taste of first-team
