The hike followed a set figure-of-eight route over the rugged countryside of south Shropshire and the Welsh Marches.

The aim of the challenge, which covered eight summits and had about 8,000 feet of climbing, was to complete the 50-mile course in under 24 hours and police today said everything ran like "clockwork".

The first Longmynd Hike took place in 1967 and has been held over the first weekend of October every year since.

A national outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in 2001 was the only year the event was cancelled.

Hundreds of competitors took to the hills on Saturday to take part in the Longmynd Hike on Saturday.

Their aim was to complete the course in less than 24 hours.
