The yellow warning runs from 3am to 3pm on Friday.

There is also a yellow warning of ice from 2am to 9am on Friday.

The Met office said: "A band of rain, heavy at times, is expected to move eastwards over the UK on Friday.

"With cold air in place, a spell of snow will develop on its leading edge.

"Above around 100 metres, 2-5 cm is possible quite widely and above 250 metres, accumulations of 10-15 cm are possible.

"At low levels, snow will be more variable, with 0-3 cm possible."

It added: "Icy patches are expected to form for a time on Friday morning as a band of rain, sleet and snow pushes northeastwards across parts of England.

"Some roads and railways are likely to be affected leading to longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

"Some delays to air travel are also possible. Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces are possible."

Drivers were warned to take extra care on icy roads this morning after temperatures in Shropshire fell to below zero last night, with snow falling in some areas.

Flood alerts which had been in place yesterday for the region have now been lifted.

The Met Office said temperatures fell to as low as -4.5C (24F) in Katesbridge, County Down, in the early hours of Thursday while most parts of the UK hovered around 0C (32F).

Emergency services were today urging motorists to be aware of icy roads, with a yellow warning for ice in place until 11am and temperatures expected to rise to no more than 3C during the day before dropping to freezing again overnight.

But the sub-zero temperatures are about to be replaced with a band of far milder weather.

That’s good news for revellers planning to party into the early hours on New Year’s Eve.

Frank Bird from Highways England said the worst of the conditions in the West Midlands were over as the bad weather moved eastwards. He added that temperatures would move above freezing in both daytime and at night, hitting 8C New Year’s Day and 3C New Year’s Eve.
