A53 blocked near Shrewsbury after lorry overturns

A lorry driver has been taken to hospital after his vehicle overturned in a field near Shrewsbury today, completely blocking the A53.

Four fire engines were sent to the scene between Shawbury and Hodnet, near to the Stanton village junction, just before 8am.

The crews used a short extension ladder to help a male out of the lorry and then made the vehicle safe.

The ambulance service and the police were also at the scene.

A 59-year-old man was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. He was complaining of pain in his right thigh and to the top of his head.

The road was reopened by 8.55am.

Kieren Bodill, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "West Mercia Police received a call around 8am this morning to reports of a single-vehicle collision on the A53, Stanton upon Hine Heath.

"The incident involved a lorry that had left the carriageway and overturned into a nearby field.

"Emergency services involving fire, ambulance and police were in attendance.

"The road was closed for a short period whilst emergency services dealt with the incident.

"The road was reopened at around 8.55am."
