Overnight roadworks for A5 and A483 at Oswestry
Motorists face almost a week of disruption as a major route on the Shropshire and Wales border will be closed overnight for roadworks.
The work will be taking place until Saturday on a five-mile stretch from the Mile End roundabout at Oswestry to the Gledrid roundabout on the A5/A483 north of Oswestry. The road will be closed in both directions.
Drainage improvements, patching, vegetation clearance, sign cleaning and lining are among the works being carried out as part of the scheme. Shropshire Council said the work will be carried out under a full closure, from 8.30pm until 6am, and that a fully sign-posted diversion route will be in place while the road is shut.
It comes as motorists are currently contending with months of roadworks taking place at Gledrid roundabout on the Welsh border. The Highways England work includes putting in extra approach lanes on some of the roads. While the work is being carried out at the Gledrid island, nearby roads have been closed between 9pm and 6am. The works started in January and are due to finish in June.
Gobowen resident and road safety campaigner Dot Basham said the work has caused a rise in the number of vehicles speeding through the village.
She said: "The works on the Gledrid roundabout have meant vehicles are diverted through Gobowen, and at the moment I'm being kept awake at night by heavy goods vehicles speeding through the village. I think people forget that speed limits are in force 24 hours a day, seven days a week, they don't stop at night."
A spokesman for Shropshire Council said: "We would advise all motorists to use the signed diversion route as we have carefully chosen this with suitability and safety in mind.
"We would also encourage all drivers to stick to speed limits and follow appropriate signage to ensure the safety of those working on-site and fellow road users."
