Traffic lights being removed two weeks early at Telford's Shawbirch Roundabout roadworks

Temporary four way traffic lights on Shawbirch Roundabout in Telford are due to be removed by the end of today - nearly two weeks ahead of schedule.

Telford & Wrekin Council said the early completion came after contractors McPhillips "pulled out all the stops to get the work done and traffic moving moving freely".

The lights were installed on Monday - leading to complaints about big delays for drivers - and were due to be oin place until December 23, but they were being taken down today after only being in place for six days.

The council said the work needed to be completed in the build-up to Christmas to avoid clashing with planned work on the Ketley Brook roundabout in the New Year.

Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: "We know that this work has caused a lot of frustration for motorists but hopefully everyone will recognise that it was unavoidable and that we have pulled out all the stops to get it done as quickly as possible.

"We originally anticipated that we would be on site until December 23 so to be completed virtually two weeks ahead of schedule is very pleasing.

"Work will now continue on finishing off the roundabout, with it expected to be completed by the end of January."

Shawbirch Roundabout is one of six roundabouts being upgraded across the borough as part of the Telford Growth Point package and is aimed at improving capacity to ensure the road network is capable of coping with anticipated increases in traffic levels as a result of significant inward investment.
