Traffic delays on way during 'essential' Shrewsbury roadworks

Essential roadworks could lead to traffic chaos in Shrewsbury.

Roads around Weeping Cross and Thieves Lane in Shrewsbury have already been subject to lengthy works as Severn Trent replace worn-out water pipes on Roman Road, Oteley Road and Meole Island in a £2 million project.

Huge traffic queues built up as a result and motorists were left frustrated.

Now resurfacing work to roads and approaches in the area will be carried out over a two-week period. The phased works, which are due to start later this month, will see contractors replace worn-out road surfaces.

Commuters and homeowners using the Weeping Cross roundabout, the Shrewsbury Business Park roundabout and Thieves Lane will have to follow diversions while the works, which are due to end in early August, are completed.

The work will be carried out in three phases, the first being from July 23 to July 26. Lay-bys adjacent to the Weeping Cross roundabout will be resurfaced and although no closure will be in place, traffic cones and signs will be deployed.

The next scheme of work is due to start on July 27 to July 30 when Weeping Cross roundabout and approaches to it, will be resurfaced. The roundabout will be closed for the duration of the work.

The final phase will only start once the second is completed. Thieves Lane, the roundabout and approaches will be resurfaced, provisionally from July 30 until August 6, and the business park roundabout and Thieves Lane will be closed for the duration.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We appreciate that this important work on these roundabouts and the surrounding roads will cause some disruption to local residents and businesses, but we hope they will bear with us while this important work is carried out.

"Once the work is complete, residents, businesses and road users will see significant improvements."

A signed diversion route will be in place while the road is closed.

Letters have been sent to all residents and businesses in the area to advise them about the planned work and information signs have been put in place.
