Shrewsbury's Copthorne Barracks scheme to be discussed

Councillors are to discuss how best to use £30,000 for play areas from developers behind plans to build houses at Copthorne Barracks.

Shrewsbury Town Council's planning committee will consider what they see as the best use for the Section 106 funding of £30,498 at a meeting tomorrow.

The money is being proposed because a play area planned for the new housing site is smaller than recommended by planning guidelines.

Councillor Peter Nutting, who represents Copthorne, said the committee would most likely consider three possible areas to spend the cash – Shorncliffe Drive, Copthorne Park or The Quarry.

He said: "I would prefer it to be spent at Shorncliffe Drive or the Quarry because I would not want Copthorne Park to become a family play space. But The Quarry already has equipment so I would probably rather see it spent at Shorncliffe."

A further payment of £115,000 is also planned as part of the section 106, due to the loss of a playing field on the site which has previously been used as a cricket pitch.
