Mr Kawczynski is discussing with the city council of the Polish capital about his plan to have a sculpture of the controversial former leader.

He tweeted: "In discussions with representatives of Warsaw City Council for a statue of Margaret Thatcher to be erected in this city.

"She more than any other European leader fought communism and helped to bring about its destruction, freeing our European partners."

Mrs Thatcher, the nation's first female PM, was in power from 1979 to 1990.

She was famously dubbed the Iron Lady for her uncompromising politics and leadership style.

Polish-born Mr Kawczynski has also been meeting veterans from his homeland who served in the British 8th Army during the Second World War.

He said: "One of the most enjoyable evenings of my life! We will always be proud of Anglo-Polish teamwork during WW2."
