It was expected that the town council would increase council tax by £34 a year for an average band D property.

However, a budget report that will go before councillors on Wednesday has shown the hike is £40, a 26 per cent rise on last year.

It would be the second consecutive tax rise of over 20 per cent, meaning the tax payers are paying 57 per cent more on their bills than two years ago.

The report does state that if councillors do not sanction certain projects, the tax could be reduced to £26.

Elsewhere in the county, Powys County Council and Dyfed-Powys Police are also expected to increase their council tax precepts.
