Ford confirms plans for Mondeo Estate hybrid

Brand cements the family car’s future and confirms new electrified estate variant

Ford has confirmed that when the Ford Mondeo is facelifted in 2019, a new hybrid Estate model will join the ranks.

The future of the Mondeo has been under threat recently, with Ford dropping nearly all of its passenger cars in the massive US market to focus on trucks and SUVs. However, Ford has reassured European buyers that the Mondeo will continue, and will benefit from this new hybrid estate model.

The current Mondeo hybrid is only available as a four-door saloon, with no hatchback on offer. The estate will use the existing model’s 184bhp petrol-electric drivetrain, based on a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine using the efficient Atkinson cycle and an electric motor.

Neither saloon nor estate Mondeo Hybrids will offer much in the way of pure-electric range – the drivetrain is a standard hybrid rather than a plug-in unit, with no means of charging it manually from a charge point or plug socket.

Roelant de Waard, vice president of marketing for Ford Europe, said: “For many customers the practicality offered by a estate body style is an absolute must, so we’re excited to announce that from next year those drivers will also be able to reduce their fuel bills using the sophisticated petrol-electric powertrain of our new Mondeo hybrid estate.

“Electrified powertrains will continue to play a key role in our European product line-up. Ford is investing $11 billion and plans to deliver 16 fully electric vehicles within a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles by 2022.”

Pricing and full specification details will be announced closer to the car’s launch in 2019. As with the saloon, we’d expect the hybrid to come exclusively in top-spec Titanium and Vignale trim levels. A premium of around £1,500 over the existing model is likely, putting the starting price close to £28,000.
