Part of Wellington Road, around the junction with Boughey Road, has been shut while Severn Trent Water engineers worked to fix a mains pipe and the water company previously said that the road could be closed into next week.

Now the pipe is fixed but further problems mean the road cannot reopen until tomorrow afternoon.

Sarah-Jayne O'Kane from Severn Trent Water said: "It’s one of our bigger pipes supplying the whole of Newport and so we needed to plan the work carefully to make sure that we could fix it without cutting off anyone’s water supply.

“To keep everyone safe, we have had to close the junction of Wellington Road and Boughey Road.

"We absolutely understand how frustrating this will be for people trying to drive through the area, and we can only apologise.

Understanding

“We have now successfully fixed the broken pipe, and so there is no longer any risk to water supplies.

"However, unfortunately we have found some other things down there that are broken and they will be fixed today.

"Then we need to backfill the hole and re-tarmac the road so it will probably be tomorrow afternoon before we can get the road reopened.

"We totally understand that this is going to be more inconvenience for local people and we’re so sorry for that.

“We’d like to ask everyone to bear with us while we do this tricky job, and thank people for their patience and understanding.”
