Name changes go ahead for schools in Telford and Newport

Two schools in Shropshire have gone ahead with controversial name changes, despite protest.

Abraham Darby Academy, in Madeley, has changed its name to Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby and Adams’ Grammar School in Newport has become Haberdashers’ Adams.

The schools said they wanted to change their names to reflect ‘historic links’.

But protestors launched petitions against the proposals online.

The Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby petition was signed by more than 1,930 people

There were also more than 600 signatures on the Haberdashers’ Adams petition.

Despite this, both schools have now gone through with the name change and have updated their websites accordingly.
