Despite the lift of the town's new £10 million footbridge being delayed by a day, Telford & Wrekin Council had earlier announced the A442 Eastern Primary, known locally as the EP, would reopen at 5am on Wednesday - but later admitted they might miss that target.

This afternoon the council tweeted: "We are working hard to get both carriageways reopened for the morning rush hour tomorrow. However, there is a possibility that they won't be open for 5am as originally planned. We will provide a further update in the morning when we know more."

Earlier the council tweeted that the giant crane brought in to lift the bridge in to place had nearly been dismantled, and thanked people for their patience.

The 230-tonne bridge was lifted into position Sunday night and was completed at about 5am on Monday morning.

The lift had been scheduled for Saturday night but the operation was cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.

The new bridge will now require further finishing engineering works before it can be used and is expected to open fully to the public in November.
