Firefighters were called to the scene in Naird Lane about 2.25pm today.

Workers ruptured the main line gas pipe, and the road was closed for safety for about half an hour.

A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said the firefighters were on stand-by in case there was an explosion, but had left the scene by 3.20pm.

West Mercia Police spokesman Kieren Bodill said: "Fire service and gas engineers attended the scene.

"A road closure was put in place at around 2.50pm and was later lifted at 3:20pm.

"There was no threat to the public and the matter as now been resolved."
