The tragedy happened at a rural level crossing to the rear of Stokesay Castle at about 10.15am yesterday.

The line, part of the major rail route from Manchester to Cardiff, was closed for the rest of the morning while emergency services dealt with the scene.

British Transport Police say the person hit could not be saved.

A spokesman said: "Officers were called to Stokewood level crossing in Shropshire at 10.15am today, following reports of a person struck by a train.

"Officers attended alongside paramedics but sadly a person died at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner."

Trains were halted with replacement coaches ferrying passengers by road between Shrewsbury and Hereford through the morning and into the afternoon.

The line re-opened at 2.10pm but delays continued due to the knock-on effects throughout the afternoon.

It is the second time a train has hit someone in the area south of Craven Arms in the space of a year.

In July 2016 a 46-year-old man survived being struck by a train while crossing the line, again to the rear of Stokesay Castle, though he was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
