Shrewsbury man, 82, denies historical child rape charges

An 82-year-old man from Shrewsbury is to stand trial for rape and unlawful sex with a girl under 13 years old, for alleged offences committed more than 40 years ago.

John Hughes, of Lindale Court in Copthorne Road, denied four charges of raping the girl when she was under 16 between 1981 and 1984 when he appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Thursday.

He also pleaded not guilty to two charges of having unlawful sexual intercourse with the same girl when she was under 13 between the years 1975 and 1976.
