Dr Richard Hayman will be exploring some of the ways that rivers have played a part in history, with special emphasis on Shropshire's biggest river, the Severn, and the Wye, which carves its way across Herefordshire.

The Victoria County History event is from 2pm to 5pm at the Baptist Church in Claremont Street, Shrewsbury , with booking online at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/vch-shropshire-annual-lecture-tickets-34191858770.

Dr Hayman's talk will tell how the Severn became a symbol for the nation, why rivers drew hermits to the water's edge, and how rivers have played a crucial role in human conflict.
