Shrewsbury Flower Show preparations are well in hand for this week's event. From left Nigel Pearson, trades stand chairman, Ann Kirkham, marquee manager, and Richard Whittingham, chairman of Shropshire Horticultural Society.

Shrewsbury Flower Show takes place in The Quarry on Friday and Saturday for the 130th time, with a host of star performers lined up for the event.

And it has been a challenge getting the venue ready in a week that has seen prolonged and often torrential showers.

The Met Office today predicted a cloudy day tomorrow, with some rain forecast for a short period at lunchtime.

And Saturday looks the better of the two days when the forecast is for a mostly cloudy day with sunny intervals.

Topping the bill at the show will be Masterchef star John Torode, delivering cookery demonstrations throughout the show. A number of top local chefs will also be passing on their knowledge, including Paul Crowe, James Sherwin, Tim Roberts, and Chris Burt.

The demonstrations take place in the food hall, which will be full of tasty treats served up by scores of top producers.

Alongside tents packed with horticultural splendour there will be a packed line-up of entertainment, ahead of the stunning fireworks display to sign off on the show.

Male harmony group The Overtones will be performing at 7pm on the Saturday, before the headline slot is taken by a spectacular massed bands finale.

The massed bands, who will be performing at 9pm on Friday and Saturday, include The Band of the Royal Corps of Signals, The Reserve Band of the Mercian Regiment, joined by musicians from The Band of the Lancashire Artillery Volunteers, and The Band and Corps of Drums of the Yorkshire Volunteers.

The fireworks take place at 9.45pm on both Friday and Saturday.

Celebrity gardeners Penny Meadmore and Joe Swift will be passing on their tips at a gardeners question time, and visitors can also tour the spectacular show gardens.

The arena programme also includes a variety of entertainers with The Royal Signals Motorbike Display Team, showjumping, and falconry, all taking place throughout the event.
