Elderly enjoy tea and cake with cats

Two local charities recently joined hands to organise an afternoon tea and the opportunity to meet a variety of animals for a group of older people.

Shropshire Cat Rescue hosted the tea party at their shelter at Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury with volunteers providing sandwiches, scones, cakes and cat faced biscuits.

Contact the Elderly, Shrewsbury, provided transport for all those taking part. It is part of a national organisation that aims to alleviate the isolation of lonely older people over the age of 75 by organising monthly get-togethers at the home of a volunteer host.

Margaret Lloyd from Shropshire Cat Rescue, said: “We were delighted to host this event and welcome guests and volunteers from Contact the Elderly. We are so grateful to everyone who provided the delicious food. After tea, our guests went to meet the cats and kittens, the pygmy goats, Shetland ponies, chickens and Hector the poodle. It was a very enjoyable afternoon for all concerned and the ladies had ‘goody bags’ to take away.

“Shropshire Cat Rescue is very active in the community, working with schools, providing work experience and taking cats to visit the residents of care homes,” she added, “and we are looking forward to holding more afternoon teas for older people at the shelter.”
