Shropshire campaigners in London march
Campaigners from Shropshire joined hundreds of thousands of others in London for the largest ever pro-European march at the weekend.
A coach full of anti-Brexit protestors joined an estimated half a million people who filled the streets around Parliament demanding a people's vote on the final Brexit deal.
Jayne Middleton, spokesperson for the European Movement in Oswestry and North Shropshire said the crowd was addressed by activist and business woman Gina Miller, MPs Vince Cable, David Lammy, Anna Soubry and Caroline Lucas, actor Tony Robinson, human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, Femi Oluwole from ‘Our Future Our Choice’, Dr Lauren Gavaghan from the NHS, Vice-President of the National Union of Students Amatey Doku and others from all walks of life.
"They included Brigadier Stephen Goodall, a veteran from World War Two, who attended in a wheelchair proudly wearing his medals to explain how important the European Union has been in maintaining the peace we have enjoyed for over 70 years.
“It was an amazing day out but the huge numbers shows the strength of feeling. The People’s Vote campaign is taking off across the country on this vital issue for all our futures.
“It has become clear in recent weeks that the Government is intent on a bad Brexit deal that will destroy jobs, harm our NHS and wreck the future of our young people.
“Whether you were a leaver or a remainer two years ago, no one really thinks Brexit is going well. We didn't know about the £40 billion divorce bill back then or that promises on extra money for the NHS would be broken. Above all, we didn't know that political leaders in Westminster would be so shallow and self-serving to make such a mess of it.
“Here in Oswestry and North Shropshire we will be out campaigning all summer to make sure the people get their democratic right to have their voice heard on Brexit. We urge everyone to sign the petition calling for a People’s Vote on the final deal.”
