All aboard for the transport festival

The 1991 Daimler Double Six Series 3 was taken to the Cambrian Railways event in Oswestry by owner, David Kelly.

Mr Kelly, from Wrexham said: ""The car was supplied new to HM Queen Elizabeth II by Jaguar Cars and used between 1991 and 1995 to attend various public engagements, and also personally between Buckingham Palace and Windsor or Sandringham.

"When I bought it in 2008 there was no indication of its royal history, which was only uncovered months later through the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust and confirmed by the Royal press office."

The cars and motorbikes threatened to upstage the more usual attractions, the trains, at the Oswestry headquarters of the heritage railway.

Event organiser Jenny Pickstock said: "We had 31 cars and four motorbikes, and everybody was saying what a lovely atmosphere it was and how they enjoyed the exhibits and the food and the train. It was fantastic.

"There was a good range of vehicles from a Porsche to Morris Minors, and the Daimler once owned by the Queen. The exhibitors were mostly local, and it was really good to see how much interest there was in the event, despite the weather not being so good. We've already started planning next year's event, which will be on May 12.

"We had our steam train running during the event, as well as a shuttle bus to Llynclys Station so that people could enjoy both sections of our railway."

Exhibitor John Clifford, from Forden, was showing his London cab for the first time at the event.

"It's a Carbodies LT1 and I've only had it a couple of months," he said. "I did some work on it to put it back to its original condition and I'm planning to show it at more events like this one."

Robert Thomas, from Porthywaen, showed his 1947 Wolseley 8. He said: "I bought the car as a wreck and did it up five years ago. I do a lot of shows with it now and use it to raise money for charities."
