The driver of the car had to be cut free and was left with a dislocated knee after the crash with the van on Queens Road on April 16.

He was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment, while a police officer travelling in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and was discharged at the scene.

Police have said that their vehicle was on route to search for three people who had run from a vehicle that had failed to stop, and that an investigation is taking place to see if any lessons need to be learned by the force.

Chief inspector Mark Reilly said: “Around 5pm on Thursday, April 16, a police vehicle was involved in a collision with another car in Whitchurch. The driver of the car suffered a dislocated knee and received hospital treatment.

"The police vehicle was on route to assist in the search of three people who had ran from a vehicle that had failed to stop for police. A local investigation is being carried out to establish any lessons learned.”

Four fire appliances were sent to the crash from Wellington and Whitchurch, and crews used cutting equipment to free the injured man before he was handed into the care of paramedics.
