Storm Ophelia: Fallen trees block roads across Shropshire as Boots in Welshpool closed because of unsafe roof

Storm Ophelia brought trees down in Shropshire and forced Boots in Welshpool town centre to close after the high winds dislodged slates from the roof.

A tree fell in Oswestry on Monday, blocking the entrance to a housing estate. The tree fell on the entrance to houses next to Oswestry Cricket Club, just off Morda Road.

A tree also fell in Back Lane, Tibberton, near Newport, which left the road completely blocked.

Elsewhere, Heathwood Road in Higher Heath near Whitchurch was partially blocked due to a fallen tree. A branch was partially blocking B5476 Tilstock to Whitchurch road.

A tree fell on a parked vehicle in Hussey Road, Shrewsbury - police said there were no injuries but the road was blocked.

There was also a tree down partially blocking Harlescott Lane in Shrewsbury and the A495 Ellesmere to Cockshutt was partially blocked.

A woman was injured after being hit by a falling branch in Wrexham.

Shropshire and Mid Wales felt the affect of Storm Ophelia which battered the UK and Ireland with winds of up to 80mph.

In Welshpool, firefighters were called to Broad Street just before 2pm to remove a number of loose tiles from the roof of the shop.

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire Service said: "Boots will remain closed until the unsafe slates have been removed from the roof and the area has been cordoned off."

A crew from Welshpool Fire Station and the aerial team from Llandrindod Wells were on scene.
