Alan and James plan their River Severn adventure
Two members of the West Mercia Search and Rescue team are to travel the length of the River Severn in their kayaks.
Alan Jones and James O’Sullivan are both specialist kayakers in the team, helping to search rivers, lakes and other watercourses during search and rescue operations.
They plan to complete the 220 miles in just four days at the end of May.
The Severn rises in the hills of Mid Wales and for the first stretch, where the water is too shallow, the pair plan to cover the distance on mountain bikes.
Once at Llanidloes they will switch to their sea kayaks and head for the Bristol Channel.
While they are on the water, colleagues from the search and rescue team will give them support from dry land.
Alan, 46, from Oswestry, has kayaked for 35 years and represented Wales in slalom, river racing and surf kayaking.
He took part in the World Surf kayak championships in 2009.
“I have had so much enjoyment from kayaking that I thought it was time to give something back and so joined West Mercia Search and Rescue,” he said.
