Ticket and payment machines and signage will be updated on November 4, and parking in all of Shropshire Council's car parks in the town will be free for that day as work is carried out.

The new parking arrangements in Shrewsbury, which come in to force on November 5, are being introduced as part of Shropshire Council’s new parking strategy.

The changes will see a set price per hour to park which the council say will make charges simpler.

There will be a 15 minutes’ pop and shop parking allowance – including 10 minutes’ statutory grace period.

Payments for parking can be made using contactless methods, card and coins at the new pay and display machines.

Cashless

Cashless parking will be possible with the 'MiPermit' system and motorists will be able to use their smartphone, text messages, website or telephone to make a payment.

There will be free parking on Sundays and bank holidays in Frankwell and Abbey Foregate car parks as well as a free parking after 6pm (excluding Raven Meadows multi-storey) and free parking after eight hours in Frankwell Main, Frankwell Quay and Abbey Foregate car parks.

It will be possible to park for £1.50 all day on Sundays and bank holidays in Raven Meadows Multi-storey.

There will be no more short-stay parking – excluding Frankwell Riverside car park.

Discounted weekly, season and resident's tickets will be available in Frankwell Main and Abbey Foregate car parks.

From November 5 parking for five hours or less in Frankwell Main, Frankwell Quay and Abbey Foregate car parks will be cheaper than before the changes, and it will be cheaper to park in St Julian’s Friars car park for two hours or less.

Steve Davenport, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Our new parking strategy is designed to make parking charges clearer and simpler, and to deliver a wide range of other improvements and benefits to people using our car parks.

"After a number of lengthy consultations in which people have told us their thoughts, I’m pleased that everything has now been agreed and we can now start to introduce the new parking charges and arrangements across the county.

“The new arrangements in Shrewsbury offer a wide range of benefits to users of our car parks, and a number of improvements on the current arrangements, including a variety of free and cheap parking, and parking charges that are easier to understand – together with a wider range of payment methods.

“I’m delighted that we’re able to offer free parking on November 4 while we get everything ready for the following day, and hope this will encourage people to visit the town that Sunday.”

Following their introduction in Shrewsbury new parking charges will be rolled out in Ludlow in late November, Bridgnorth and Oswestry in January 2019 and in all other areas, including Market Drayton, Whitchurch, Wem and Much Wenlock in February 2019.
