There have been some happy and beautifully-framed faces in Chirk this week.

Scores of people have taken the chance to get their long locks cut and their beards shorn.

The Hair Shop in Colliery Road, in the Welsh border town, opened its doors yesterday having seen the day’s appointments booked up as soon as Mark Drakeford, Wales’s First Minister, announced hair salons could reopen.

Owner Sarah Williams said her customers had been desperate to get their hair done after the winter lockdown.

Working with colleague Becky Davies, she said the reopening been a busy but good day.

“It has been a really lovely day,” she said. “Everyone has been really pleased to be here. It is so nice to so just how happy it makes people, just to have a hair appointment.

“We have had people of all ages in today and every type of booking, from cuts to colours and shampoo and sets.

“We only had one man in – and he was really desperate to get his hair cut.”

Sarah said she had been surprised the decision had been taken to allow hairdressers and and barbers to reopen but not non-essential shops.

“But we are just so delighted to be open again. Our staff and I have really missed our customers. We have invested a lot of money in PPE and methods to ensure social distancing.

“We are lucky in that we are in two shop units so we can have a side to come in and wait and then the other to have the hair appointment and to leave. But we still can’t have as many customers as before.”

However, just a mile or so down the road, or across the Chirk aqueduct, Shropshire residents will have to wait until April 12 at the very earliest for their new hair do.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson says hairdressers will come into phase two of the unlocking of restrictions, as long as coronavirus infection numbers keep going in the right direction.
