It will add additional capacity to the hospital, with the much-needed extra beds due to be available from spring next year.

Modular buildings are made from prefabricated units made off site that can be put up quickly on site.

Darwin Group, based in Shrewsbury, specialises in modular construction and has created the prefabricated buildings.

Paul Simmons, capital projects manager at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, which manages the hospital, said the last of the units for the ward were installed yesterday.

He said: "The next step is to cut out the windows. We will then ensure it is watertight and secure before Christmas.”

It comes as the hospitals are facing significant pressures as they head into winter, with work also taking place on the emergency department at RSH to try and relieve some pressure.

It is getting a £9.3m upgrade to increase capacity and upgrade facilities within A&E, which will give the department 11 additional cubicles. The first phase of this work has finished.

The larger clinical areas will be complete by Christmas and all areas finished by early spring 2022.
